The Plant Industry Program functions of the WDA Technical Services Division are multi-faceted. Primary duties include:

  • Apiary (honey bee) Inspections
  • Commodity Grading
  • Feed, Seed, and Fertilizer sampling & label reviews
  • Leaf Cutter Bee Inspection & Sampling
  • Nursery Stock Inspection

Wyoming Quarantines

Apiary: 80% of all food crops rely upon honey bees for pollination. Inspection assures that the bees and honey comb are free from disease and parasites. Wyoming has 48,000 colonies of bees and averages 66 pounds of honey per colony.

Commodity Grading: Services offered include commodity grading for Wyoming's dry bean crops (primarily pintos & great northerns) and potatoes. East-central Wyoming and the Big Horn Basin are the regions for dry bean production. Southeast Wyoming produces seed and table-stock potatoes.

Feed, Seed, and Fertilizer Sampling/Inspection: To assure the Wyoming Consumer and Businesses receive quality products, field staff will sample products for compliance with label guarantees and labeling requirements. These services are coordinated with the Wyoming Seed Lab, Wyoming Seed Certification, and the Analytical Services Lab.

Leaf Cutter Bee Lab: Leaf Cutter Bees are very important for alfalfa seed production. An inspection and sampling program is maintained to assure that the Leaf Cutter Bees used for pollination are free from disease and parasites.

Nursery Stock: Nursery stock grown or shipped into or out of Wyoming is inspected for absence of injurious insects and plant diseases. Vigilance is maintained to assure the consumer that nursery stock is viable and that no new or exotic insects or diseases are brought into the state.
